Pathetic Prayers vs. Powerful Prayers
When we said yes to Rwanda, I didn't know if God was calling us to spend every penny we had to go. My prayer was, "Lord, if you are calling us to do that, it doesn't make much sense. My prayer is that you would please not let us get a divorce over the financial burden of it when we get home." This sounds like a pathetic prayer; what low standards I have! But this prayer was HEARTFELT and all I could pray.
I shared this in life group. Dave Munson said, "I believe God is going to provide for you to get there, and I think He's going to use you to help others go as well." I pondered what he said in my heart and my mind could not conceive of it.
We closed in prayer that night and Dave prayed, "Lord, please provide everything the Burgins need to go to Rwanda and please use them to help others go too."
This was one of my first encounters with what I might call a "Mighty Munson Prayer." The Munsons pray big. I am learning to pray for bigger things for God's kingdom - and why not? Why do I pray "please let our marriage survive when I could pray "Lord, please give us one of the best, most amazing marriages ever and use our marriage God to advance your kingdom!"
Rather than pray that I get at least an edible apple to eat, why don't I pray for my favorite apple tree - so I can have my favorite AND have some to feed my friends too?
